This silhouette represents the men of Chatton and Chillingham parishes who never returned from the war, and is part of a national 2018 Armistice Project to commemorate the end of World War One. 'There But Not There' will be the defining centenary commemoration of the end of the 1914-1918 war, installed where the men and women came from across the country, back in the communities they left behind. Our Tommy was purchased with crowd-funding by the people of Chatton in memory of those local men who died serving their country

William Carr | Pte 1st/7th Bn. Northumberland Fusiliers. Died 16/06/1915 Aged 20. Commemorated at YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium, and on Chatton War Memorial. James Gallon | Pte, 12th Battn, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 3rd July 1916, aged 26, during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of William and Isabella Gallon of Weetwood, Wooler and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France and on Chatton War Memorial. He had been born at Kimmerston and had originally enlisted in the 15th Battalion of the Fusiliers before being transferred to the 12th. |
John Hinson | Pte, 1st/7th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 15th September 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial and on Chatton War Memorial. He fell in an assault on German positions near Mametz Wood in France on 15/9/1916 which was only partially successful. The Battalion suffered heavy casualties with 3 Officers and 40 Other Ranks killed and 7 Officers and 219 Other Ranks Wounded. In addition 74 Other Ranks were posted missing. |

Thomas Nesbit | Pte 13th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He was killed in action in France on 11th July 1916 during the Battle of the Somme and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Thiepval, Somme, France and on Chatton War Memorial. |

Robert Redhead | Pte 3rd Battalion, East Yorkshire Regiment. He died in St John's Military Hospital, Hull on 1st July 1918 and is buried in Chatton Churchyard. He was the eldest son of Robert and Mrs Redhead of Hetton House, Chatton and had enlisted on attaining the age of 18. He had worked on his fathers farm and it seemed his heart was not strong although the doctors had passed him A1. He had only been in the Army for three weeks and the local M.P. Sir Francis Blake raised his case in the House Of Commons and asked why he had been passed for service in the first place when it was obvious that he was not strong enough for the rigours of Military life. John Renton | Rifleman 8th Battalion, Royal Irish Rifles. He was killed in action in Belgium on 3rd August 1917, aged 23, during the Battle of Third Ypres. He was the son of Ralph and Margaret Renton of Chillingham and is commemorated on the Menin Gate, Ypres, Flanders, Belgium and on Chatton War Memorial. |
Robert Rutherford | Pte, 11th Battalion, Northumberland Fusiliers. He died in France on 30th July 1916, aged , 22, of wounds received in action during the Battle of the Somme. He was the son of Robert and Margaret Rutherford of Chatton and is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Commemorated on Chatton War Memorial |
Samuel Sanderson | Pte 1/4th Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers (TF). Died: 26/10/1917 Aged: 21. Commemorated / Buried: Poelcapelle British Cemetery and on Chillingham War Memorial. Arthur Sword | Pte 1st/4th (Border) Batt, Kings Own Scottish Borderers. He was killed in action at Gallipoli, aged 20, on 12th July 1915 during the "Charge" on the Turkish trenches at Achi Baba Nullah. He was the son of the late William and Agnes Sword and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey, and on Chatton War Memorial. |
